Dr. Patricia Slaughter

The mission of Trantwood Elementary School, in cooperation with family and community, is to develop the potential of every student through successful learning experiences in a supportive environment so that each shall be a contributing member of our ever-changing society.

Utilizing governing values, and a comprehensive strategic plan, we work hard to practice our mission and are proud to be the "best" of the 54 elementary schools in Virginia Beach. Located midway off Great Neck Road, we currently have 522 enrolled students in a K-5 facility.

Our theme for this year is "Traveling the Road to Success." Through Trantwood's focus on student achievement, setting of high expectations, individualizing student instruction, and emphasizing language-based and writing instruction, our scores on the SOLs at grades 3 and 5 and the Stanford Achievement test are good. Our teachers never take this for granted and are continually working to improve student achievement.

Our "Courteous Cardinals" are announced daily. Our "Citizen of the Month" celebrations take place monthly. We encourage our students to always give us the "Trantwood Try" and to be full of the "Cardinal Spirit" to help them soar to new heights.

Mrs. Grace Colombara

Everyone and everything at Trantwood invites the successful learning experiences of every student! This involves the people (students, teachers, media specialist, counselor, assistants, office staff, nurse, cafeteria staff, custodians, volunteers, administrators), the places (classrooms, offices, hallways, commons, restrooms, playing fields, gymnasium, lawns, media center), the policies (rules, codes, regulations, procedures), and programs (curricular and extracurricular, including the spirit in which the programs are conducted). My education and life experiences have prepared me to pay careful attention to the Four P’s (people, places, policies, and programs) which ensures that each child shall be a contributing member of our ever-changing society.

My formal education was from the University of Pittsburgh, Temple, and Old Dominion University. I taught kindergarten thru fifth grades in Pennsylvania, the Department of Defense Dependent Schools, and Virginia. One highlight of my career was being selected Elementary Teacher of the Year for York County. To affect young people on a broader scale, I pursued my dream of becoming a school administrator. It is truly a blessing and privilege to be a part of Trantwood’s dedicated staff and outstanding student body.
