Digital Learning Anchor Schools

 http://www.vbschools.com/curriculum/DigitalLearning/content/images/DigLearningAnchorSchoolslogo.jpgThe Digital Learning Anchor School initiative was prompted by the adoption of Compass to 2020, the school division’s five-year strategic framework. The framework’s strategies include providing students with personalized learning opportunities that incorporate the use of digital resources to prepare them for employment or post-secondary educational opportunities in a globally-competitive environment.
As part of the strategic framework, the following digital learning goal was developed: “To use digital learning as a pathway to personalized learning by increasing student flexibility with respect to when and how learning occurs.”
Following a study of national trends and best practices in digital learning, the school division identified basic tenants of digital learning and will implement and further develop them through the Digital Learning Anchor Schools initiative. The goals of the initiative are:

  • To develop a cadre of schools to serve as model digital learning schools within the division;
  • To study specifics in the field with respect to pedagogy and device implementation.

The following 15 schools are serving as Digital Learning Anchor Schools for the 2016-2017 school year. Information about their work is shared on their respective Anchor School blogs. Click on a school name to read more.

In addition to division-level support, each Anchor School has a Digital Learning Leadership Team consisting of teachers and the school principal. Leadership teams from all schools meet on a regular basis to support each other in this digital learning endeavor. Though the goals of the program are directly tied to student learning, a variety of digital devices provided by the school division also will be used and studied during the school year. Students will have the opportunity to use these devices in school and, in some cases, at home.
Digital devices being evaluated by Anchor Schools include:
